Beyond Holidays: Teaching about Religion in K-8 Classrooms LIMITED
Thursday April 24, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am EDT
Avoiding the topic of religion is not really an option in today’s classrooms. Recent world events, increases in religiously motivated discrimination/harassment/violence, and enhanced recognition of religion as a factor in intersectional identity formation all highlight the importance of teaching about the world’s religions in U.S. schools. Religious holidays are a familiar entry point, and there are lots of published kids’ books and lesson plans using that angle. However, religious holidays can be problematic, particularly when it comes to equity. We’ll explore numerous alternatives to “the holiday approach,” with options like U.N. days (e.g., International Day of Peace, Zero Discrimination Day), pan-religious themes (e.g., sacred spaces), pan-religious values (e.g., kindness, charitable giving), and non-devotional non-holiday-centered kids’ books. We’ll also have time to hear from one another about challenges, concerns, and best practices. Handouts will include my recommendations for Diwali books, Hanukkah books, and Sikh books, as well as a Written Rationale for Teaching About World Religions, a PD document developed in conjunction with Tim Hall, current President of the NCCSS.

Capturing the Unseen: Unveiling the Role of Women Activists in the Greensboro Sit-Ins Through Historical Inquiry LIMITED
Thursday April 24, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am EDT
This session presents a historical inquiry designed to teach fourth-grade students how to develop counternarratives that challenge prevailing, and often-simplified, accounts of the 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins, a pivotal Civil Rights event. Inspired by classes taught in a college environment, an elementary social studies teacher educator and two university archivists tailored the inquiry for elementary teachers who want to explore this historical event and consider alternative perspectives with students. To this end, we have developed a five-phase inquiry to investigate the question: “Who planned and carried out the Greensboro Sit-Ins of 1960?” The topic would be most appropriate for US History social studies.

This content is especially relevant for U.S. history and civics classes.

Parents have shared their pictures, videos, stories, and artifacts that connect to our classroom curriculum. We want to share how the idea came about, how it has evolved, and what we have learned through this journey in developing parent partnerships.

Keynote & Book Signing: Teaching about Religion in Polarizing Times
Thursday April 24, 2025 1:00pm - 1:50pm EDT
Teaching about Religion in Polarizing Times: Most states require social studies teachers to teach about the world's religions, but how do educators avoid controversy in an increasingly polarized country? Religion is at the center of renewed culture wars as some state leaders and lawmakers push for Ten Commandments posters in schools; religious chaplains as counselors; Christianity-infused lesson plans; and a Bible in every classroom. Author of Faith Ed, Linda K. Wertheimer, whose own personal story set her off on a quest to write about religion in schools, will share examples of teachers who have navigated controversies in world religion classes. What are some lessons learned? What difference can high-quality instruction about religion make in combating religious bigotry and improving religious literacy?

Linda K. Wertheimer will be signing copies of her book, Faith Ed: Teaching about Religion in an Age of Intolerance, which will be available for purchase after her keynote address. Proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the National Council for the Social Studies' First Timer Scholarship Program, in line with NCCSS's commitment as a Gold Star Affiliate.

Social Studies the Gateway to the World
Thursday April 24, 2025 2:30pm - 2:55pm EDT
Social Studies: The Gateway to the Worlds. I wanted to share some thoughts on how our Social Studies curriculum can really emphasize the connection between history and current events. It’s fascinating to see how historical events shape today’s world, and I believe we can enhance our students’ understanding by making these links clearer. Let’s talk about how we can integrate discussions on historical influences into our lessons. For instance, exploring significant events and their impacts can help students see the relevance of history in their daily lives and current affairs. I’d appreciate your input on how we can collaborate to make this a focal point in our teaching. Perhaps we could brainstorm some activities or projects that highlight these connections?

Today, they are more popular than ever. Last year, North Carolina employed its state lottery to raise more than $1 billion for education programs in our state. PBS NC Film Screening - American Coup: Wilmington 1898 LIMITED
Thursday April 24, 2025 5:00pm - 6:30pm EDT

Join North Carolina Council for Social Studies, PBS North Carolina, and Working Films for a screening of American Coup: Wilmington 1898, a documentary that tells the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city in 1898 — the only coup d’état in the history of the US. This screening is part of a statewide effort to better equip educators to share the story of the massacre, its place in US history, and its lasting impact.
American Coup: Wilmington 1898 shares the story of how self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically-elected, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history.

The screening will include a representative from PBS North Carolina Education Services who will share information about resources for educators. These resources include standards-aligned curriculum for incorporating the film into the classroom, as well as professional development opportunities for continued support for teachers. Attendees will be provided with documentation for CEUs.

Join us for this free screening and discussion to learn more about the massacre and coup, its place in US history, and its lasting impact. Together, we can ensure that the lessons of Wilmington’s past inform conversations around democracy today.
