North Carolina has the highest Indigenous population east of the Mississippi, making the state’s past and present rich with Indigenous histories & resilient cultures. The American Indian Heritage Commission, a program of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources (DNCR), is dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and promoting North Carolina’s American Indian history, arts, customs, cultures, and modern-day contributions. In this session, we’ll explore contemporary American Indian communities around the state, dispel common misconceptions, and work to build awareness that can better serve Native and non-Native students. Participants will also learn about DNCR’s classroom resources and professional development opportunities.
