About me
We are the nation’s leading resource for family history research. Our professional genealogists offer lectures, book events, research tours, and individual consultations. Our website has 1.4 billion searchable names, and our library houses the largest collection of original family history research materials in the country.
We are the anchor institution for the PBS show Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and we have a new initiative entitled 10 Million Names, dedicated to recovering the names of the estimated ten million people of African descent who were enslaved in pre- and post-colonial America.
The mission of our youth education program is to make genealogy accessible to all students, regardless of their background or family configuration. We offer a variety of free resources and programs for students and teachers around the country, including our Family History Curriculum, virtual and in-person field trips, an annual essay contest, and teacher professional development workshops.
