Many holidays embody national pride alongside cultural and religious practices and instruction about holidays is frequently required by elementary state social studies standards… but often, lessons about holidays focus on the dominant stories of the majority of the U.S. population, ignoring or diminishing holidays of minoritized populations. By exploring Diwali in-depth, this session provides an example of how to teach about global holiday traditions, pairing texts from the NCSS Notable Trade Book list with discussion strategies to develop deep critical thinking skills.
